PotD: Tempe Music Festival

Saturday night I covered the Tempe Music Festival. This time I was taking pictures of Fergie the pop singer... What are the chances that I'd be shooting two famous Fergies in two days? (See previous day's post if you don't know what I'm talking about.)

Here are my Photo(s) of the Day:

The Gin Blossoms were the other big name band there Saturday night.

And there was a skateboard ramp there as well.

PotD: Fergie & Friends

No, this post has nothing to do with the pop singer...Retired Hall of Fame baseball player Fergie Jenkins' (first frame, left) foundation sponsored a charity baseball game called Fergie & Friends with some of his fellow retired baseballers last night in Mesa.

I never really followed sports too closely, so I'm a little embarrassed that I didn't know who any of these people are/were, but apparently there were some pretty big names there. I got to hang out on the field and in the dugout since my editor, Ed, was participating in the game.

Here are my Photo(s) of the Day:

PotD: What a Day!!

Photos of the Day:

9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. ASU campus--> We're going to be running a story about young mothers that are also college students. The idea was to have a large group photo, but that predictably fell through...I could only get a couple of women with their kids together at one time.
It's obvious from these next photos that kids love me...

2:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. Tolleson--> Where there's smoke, there's fire...I chased down the first brush fire of the season today between shoots...This one took me to 109th Avenue and Baseline. The cops had the scene shut down so nobody could get too close. I did what I could.
Those are 30-foot flames you're looking at, people.
This helicopter was picking up water from a local pond. It was pretty cool to watch.

4:30 p.m. - 5:15 p.m. Phoenix--> A local dance instructor (the gal on the left) is teaching a Phoenix bartender a salsa dance for an upcoming charity dance competition among Valley bartenders dubbed Dancing with the Bars.
8:00 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. Phoenix--> The Trunk Space hosted the 999 Eyes Freakshow. The guy at the bottom of this frame is sticking his tongue into a metal fan.
As the grand finale, one of the characters launched a ginormous fire ball into the air.

PotD: SMOCA Nights

Last night as a photo page for the College Times I attended a fashion and art show during SMOCA Nights (SMOCA=Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Arts)...

I wasn't allowed access to the dressing area for some reason, so unfortunately I wasn't able to get any candid shots, but these are some of my favorites from the show.

It's a funny thing when a half-naked woman walks into a crowded room...Look at the contrast in faces on the guy in the white T-shirt sitting at the end of the runway and the lady in the crowd standing off to the right of the model....Hilarious. (Click on photo to enlarge)

PotD: McCain Protest

This photo was taken a couple of days ago, but I'm just getting around to posting it, so you'll have to forgive me. I've been busy.

To mark the 5th anniversary of the War in Iraq, protesters gathered outside of Republican Senator John McCain's Phoenix office on Wednesday. It was one of the friendliest crowds of people I've ever seen at a political protest. So here's my Photo of the Day.

PotD: Saint Patrick's Day

Last night I had to shoot a couple of photo pages at two different Irish bars for Saint Patrick's Day. My Photo of the Day is from the party at R.T. O'Sullivan's in Mesa. The two fellas playing the drum and the bagpipe were a big hit with the rowdy crowd drunk on green beer.

PotD: Festival of the West

Yesterday I was on the hunt for some wild art. I went to Rawhide at Wild Horse Pass for the 2008 National Festival of the West. Everyone that is part of the event wears authentic clothes and gear from the Old West era. Here are my Photos of the (Yester) Day.

This guy was adorable. I found him sleeping in his Union Army tent and started snapping away. He woke up when I got a little too close...
So he wanted me to get a picture of him outside, where he told me all about the history of the Buffalo soldiers; African-American soldiers that fought the Native Americans when settlers were "taming" the West.

PotD: Mortuary Science

Another weird class... MCC offers a Mortuary Science class where students learn how to embalm bodies and prepare them for burial.

Here, students learn to do facial reconstructions and make up...

PotD: Equine Massage

We will be featuring unusual courses that are found at ASU and the different community colleges around the Valley. Apparently Scottsdale Community College offers an Equine Massage class.

Here are a couple of my favorite shots from the day...
I'm told that when the students are massaging the horses and the lactic acid is getting worked out of their muscles, the horses chomp and lick for some reason. I thought it was pretty funny to see a horse sticking out its tongue.
