PotD: Working Like a Dog (And Loving It)

What a day! Here's a run down of my assignments today.

9:00 a.m. Tempe--> College Times group photo (two-light setup with camera on tripod, set to timer).

11:00 a.m. Phoenix--> Desert Botanical Gardens. Gorgeous day to be outside. Nature is my friend.

1:00 p.m. Tempe--> Found some wild art at ASU. A gang of break dancers putting on a show. Jackpot.

6:00 p.m. North Phoenix--> Another standard bar shot, this time at the Whiskey River Saloon on 32nd Street and Greenway.
9:30 p.m. Mesa--> Brunswick Lanes cosmic bowling. Lots of cool lights and smoke. Made for some cool action shots.

PotD: Scottish Highland Games

Hello everybody. I'm back after a long, flu/pneumonia-induced absence. I had a couple of events to shoot today. Here are some shots from the Scottish Highland Games in Phoenix.

The braener toss. It's basically a 24-pound river stone that contestants shot put.
This young buck is Scottish Highland dancing. This style of dance will be featured in "You Got Served III." Snap.
This is the cabor toss. The object is to run a few yards holding the cabor (Gaelic for "tree"), then you flip it upward. If the cabor does a complete rotation and falls away from the thrower then he gets a pat on the back.... That's probably not a true statement. I don't even know how these guys manage to pick one of these things up...

PotD: Astronaut Shenanigans

My editor Ed had the wacky idea of having a partying astronaut on our next cover. We were hoping to get a space suit with a reflective mask, but could only find one with a clear mask. I did a little creative Photoshop magic to put the reflection on the face shield. So here's my Photo of the Day.

PotD: Bike Rack

I had a number of assignments today, but they were pretty lame for the most part. My Photo of the Day for today is of an ASU student parking his bike at a busy rack.

PotD: Goldfield Ghost Town

I was hanging out with my cousins today when we decided to go check out the Goldfield Ghost Town in the desert on the way to Canyon Lake. The rustic town has an "Old West" theme and a great view of the Superstition mountains.
It has a number of attractions including mine shaft tours and a reptile and scorpion exhibit.

I liked this old water tower with the mountains in the background.

PotD: Renaissance Festival

My Photo(s) of the Day today are from the Renaissance Festival. I had to shoot a photo page for the College Times. Here are some of my favorites.

Lady Tess is a popular character.
This guy dishes out insults like a pro..... The problem is that the people he insults are armed with tomatoes. Here, he's taking one on the chin.
What's the Renaissance Festival without jousting knights?

Photo of the Day: Chinese New Year

I was actually awake early enough to catch the sunrise for once before I went to work, but that's not my photo of the day.....
Today I had to get shots at the Chinese Cultural Center in Phoenix. There's a three-day celebration going on for the Chinese New Year. This lady's playing a pi pa (pee-pah).
And this bloke is demonstrating kung fu with a Chinese long sword.

Photo of the Day: Abstract Stairs

I spent my entire work day today editing the video I shot yesterday, so once again I got nothing for photo of the day. I laid down on the floor in my front room tonight when I got home and liked what I saw.

Photo of the Day: Night Stalker

I shot video for our website today and then ended up in a meeting until the end of the day and didn't get a chance to shoot any stills. I decided to do a little night shooting for my photo(s) of the day.

There's a power plant near my house that I decided to go check out.
I had to cross a canal to get to the power plant. This is a 4-second exposure.
I was wearing my burglar outfit. A couple came walking down a path near the power plant. I said, "Hi," but I guess I looked too creepy stalking around in the dark with my camera because they looked at one another and then quickly walked away...

Photo of the Day: Office Photo Booth

Our paper goes to print on Tuesdays, so I generally don't have any assignments due. I didn't get a chance to leave the office today, so I got my long lens out and got some shots of my fellow employees hard(ly) at work... So here you have Aaron, Megan, Nate, and Emily at their respective desks...
My camera has the loudest shutter on the planet. Otherwise I would have gotten away with this unnoticed.

Photo of the Day: Tempe Town Lake Overflow

One of today's assignments was to get a shot of Tempe Town Lake overflowing with the recent rains...
The long sidewalk and lights on the north shore of the lake made a nice scene with the sun lighting up the storm clouds.
I spotted this rabbit playing a harmonica...
And liked how small these new high-rise condos looked under the clouds.

Photo(s) of the Day (Weekend) in Sedona

Sorry about the lapse in posts...This past weekend Stephanie and I rented a cabin in Sedona with some of my friends from the College Times. The cabin was in a great location with Oak Creek in the back yard and an awesome view of Cathedral Rock.

When we went on a hike near the creek there was a random boot sitting on the red rock bed by the water.
Later, we came across an old irrigation water wheel. I thought the gear attached to it looked cool.
Here's a group shot. There were a total of 12 of us and we decided to get creative with the photo.
This is a self-portrait of Stephanie and myself in front of the creek with Cathedral Rock in the background.
Cathedral Rock.
Sunday morning we got snowed on. I ran down to a field just up the hill from the creek and got a couple shots of Cathedral Rock in the snow.
